What 2a modified stone is

PennDOT 2A modified is crushed limestone or gravel graded from 1.5 inch down to dust. The fines are what make it "modified" — they fill every void so the material compacts to roughly 135 lb per cubic foot, close to 1.8 tons per cubic yard, far denser than clean stone.

At 135 lb per cubic foot, one cubic yard weighs about 1.82 US tons, and one ton spread 2" deep covers roughly 89 square feet.

How to install it

Place in 4 inch maximum lifts and compact each one with a plate or roller, lightly wetted. Compacted 2A will not rut under a loaded truck; the same material dumped and left loose will.

The mistake that costs the most

Using it where water has to drain through. 2A sheds water by design. Behind a retaining wall or in a French drain it functions as a dam, and the wall or drain fails. Clean #57 goes in drainage zones; 2A goes under things.

The math behind the calculator

Square feet × (depth in inches ÷ 12) = cubic feet. Cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Cubic feet × 135 ÷ 2,000 = US tons. The waste allowance is applied to the volume before the weight conversion, which is how suppliers quote it.
