What an asphalt driveway actually is
A driveway is four layers, and only the top one is asphalt. Underneath the black surface sits a compacted aggregate base, below that the compacted subgrade, and between them — on any soil that holds water — a geotextile separation fabric. Almost every driveway that fails early fails in one of the three layers you cannot see.
Hot mix asphalt is a blend of graded stone, sand and roughly 5% liquid bitumen binder, laid at 275-300°F and rolled while hot. Compacted, it weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot, which is the single number the whole estimating chain hangs off: one square foot at 1 inch compacted depth is roughly 12.1 pounds, so 2 inches over 1,000 square feet is about 12.1 tons.
That density is why asphalt is quoted by the ton rather than the square foot at the plant, and why the number on a supplier ticket and the number on a contractor quote rarely look like they describe the same job. The contractor is pricing tonnage plus mobilisation, excavation, base, labour and rolling.
The tonnage maths, once
Every asphalt quantity question reduces to the same three steps: area in square feet, compacted depth in feet, then weight. Multiply area by depth to get cubic feet, multiply by 145 to get pounds, divide by 2,000 to get US tons.
A 20 × 40 ft driveway is 800 sq ft. At 3 inches compacted, that is 0.25 ft of depth, so 200 cubic feet, 29,000 pounds, 14.5 tons. Order 5% over for waste, edge feather and the material left in the truck bed and you are buying about 15.2 tons.
Loose asphalt out of the truck occupies roughly 15-20% more volume than the same material after rolling. If a crew tells you they are laying 3 inches, they are spreading closer to 3.6 inches before the roller passes. Specifying compacted depth in writing removes the most common quiet shortfall on a residential job.
- Tons = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 × 145 ÷ 2,000
- Quick rule: 1 ton covers about 80 sq ft at 2 inches compacted
- Add 5% waste on simple rectangles, 8-10% on curved or multi-section drives
Depth: what each layer is for
Residential driveways are normally 2 inches of surface course over 6-8 inches of compacted crushed stone base. Where the drive carries a truck, an RV or a boat trailer, the spec moves to a 2-inch binder course plus a 1.5-inch surface course over 8 inches of base. Commercial parking lots run 3-4 inches of asphalt over 8-12 inches.
Thin asphalt over deep base outperforms thick asphalt over thin base almost every time. The base spreads the wheel load; the asphalt is a waterproof wearing surface. Doubling the asphalt while leaving 4 inches of base under it buys very little and costs a great deal.
In freeze-thaw climates the base does a second job — it drains. Water trapped under the mat freezes, expands and lifts the surface, which is why the northern spec is deeper base rather than thicker asphalt.
What the money buys
National average installed cost for a new residential asphalt driveway runs roughly $7-$13 per square foot in 2026, with resurfacing at $3-$6 and full tear-out and replacement at $8-$15. The spread inside that range is almost entirely labour rates, haul distance from the nearest hot mix plant, and how much excavation the site needs.
Materials are typically 30-40% of the ticket. That means shopping purely on asphalt price per ton moves the total far less than people expect, while a contractor who skips the base excavation to hit a number can cut 20% out of a quote and 10 years off the driveway.
Mobilisation matters more than square footage on small jobs. Getting a paver, roller and crew to site costs the same whether they lay 12 tons or 40, which is why a 400 sq ft driveway rarely costs half of an 800 sq ft one.
Lifespan and what protects it
A correctly built asphalt driveway lasts 15-25 years. Sealcoating every 3-4 years after the first year protects the binder from UV and oxidation; sealing annually is marketing, not maintenance, and builds a brittle film that cracks.
Crack filling is the highest-return maintenance there is. A quarter-inch crack left open for one winter delivers water straight into the base, and the repair escalates from a $4 tube of rubberised filler to a $600 patch.
Edges are the weak point. Asphalt has no lateral support at the perimeter, so wheels riding the edge crumble it. A compacted soil or gravel shoulder built flush to the mat solves it for free.
How to use this guide
The four guides below go deeper on the decisions that move the number most: what each line on a quote is for, how to spec depth and base for your soil and load, when in the year to pave, and whether an aging driveway wants an overlay or a tear-out.
Every figure in this cluster is wired into a calculator, so you can put your own dimensions in rather than scaling an example.

| Use | Asphalt | Base | Typical installed cost / sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light residential (cars) | 2 in surface | 6 in | $7 - $10 |
| Residential + truck / RV | 1.5 in surface + 2 in binder | 8 in | $9 - $13 |
| Shared / long rural drive | 2 in surface + 2 in binder | 8 - 10 in | $10 - $14 |
| Commercial parking | 1.5 in surface + 2.5 in binder | 10 - 12 in | $11 - $16 |

Frequently asked questions
+How many tons of asphalt do I need for a 20x40 driveway?
800 sq ft at 2 inches compacted is about 9.7 tons; at 3 inches it is about 14.5 tons. Add 5% for waste and edge feathering.
+Is asphalt cheaper than concrete for a driveway?
Yes on installation — asphalt runs roughly $7-$13 per square foot installed against $10-$18 for concrete. Concrete lasts longer with less maintenance, so the 30-year cost is closer than the day-one price suggests.
+How long before I can drive on a new asphalt driveway?
Cars after 24-72 hours depending on temperature. Keep heavy vehicles, trailer jacks and kickstands off for 30 days while the mat cures and hardens fully.
+Do I need to sealcoat a new driveway right away?
No. Wait 6-12 months so the binder can cure and surface oils flash off, then seal every 3-4 years. Sealing too early traps oils and softens the surface.
