Why the conversion is not fixed
There is no universal tons-per-yard number for asphalt because it depends entirely on density, and density depends on the mix design and how well it has been compacted. Standard compacted hot mix at 145 lb/ft³ gives 1.96 tons per cubic yard. Open-graded porous mix at 130 lb/ft³ gives 1.76.
The formula is: tons per cubic yard = density in lb/ft³ × 27 ÷ 2000. Use the density on your supplier's mix ticket if you have it; the presets above cover the common cases.
Frequently asked questions
+How many tons is a cubic yard of asphalt?
