Measuring an irregular driveway
Almost no driveway is a clean rectangle. The reliable method is to break the shape into rectangles, triangles and half-circles, measure each one, and add the results — which is what the two section inputs above are for.
Measure to the outside edge of where the asphalt will finish, not to the existing edge. Old driveways lose two to four inches of width per side to crumbling, and paving crews price the new footprint.
Why contractors quote in square yards
Paving crews think in square yards because a ton of asphalt at a standard 2-inch lift covers close to 9 square yards, which makes mental arithmetic on site fast. One square yard is 9 square feet, so divide your square footage by 9 to speak the same language as your bid.
