Asphalt driveway cost, line by line
Where the money in an asphalt quote actually goes, and which lines to push on without buying a worse driveway.

The six lines on every quote
Strip the branding off a paving quote and you find the same six components: mobilisation, excavation and haul-off, base aggregate, hot mix asphalt, labour and compaction, and overhead plus margin. A contractor who itemises these is easy to compare; one who gives a single number is not necessarily hiding anything, but you cannot see which layer they trimmed.
On a typical 800 sq ft residential replacement, mobilisation is $400-$900, excavation and disposal $1-$3 per square foot, base aggregate $0.75-$2, asphalt materials $1.50-$3, and labour the balance.
Materials are the smaller half
Hot mix runs roughly $100-$180 per ton delivered in 2026, and a 2-inch residential drive uses about 12 tons per 1,000 square feet. That is $1,200-$2,150 of asphalt inside a job that might invoice at $8,000.
This is why chasing the cheapest ton rarely moves the total more than a few percent, and why a quote that is 30% below the others is almost never buying the same tonnage. Ask for compacted depth and total tons in writing; both are verifiable against the plant ticket on the day.
What drives the spread between quotes
Haul distance from the nearest asphalt plant is the biggest hidden variable. Hot mix must arrive above about 250°F, so beyond roughly 45 minutes of travel a contractor is either paying for insulated trailers or refusing the job — and rural pricing reflects it.
Site access is second. A driveway a paver can reverse straight into costs less than one behind a gate, on a slope, or with overhead branches that force hand work. Hand-laid asphalt is two to three times the labour of machine-laid.
Seasonality is third. Late-season work in a cold climate carries a premium because plants close and crews compress the calendar.

Regional reality
Installed cost varies by roughly 40% across the US. Northeast and West Coast metros sit at the top on labour; the Midwest and South sit lowest. Freeze-thaw states also carry a deeper base spec, which adds material before labour is counted.
Use the state pages rather than a national average when you are budgeting — they carry local multipliers, the regional base spec and the length of the paving season.

Mobilisation and minimum load charges are fixed. Getting the crew, paver and roller on site costs the same for 12 tons as for 40, so the fixed share is spread over fewer square feet.
+Should I remove the old driveway myself to save money?
It can save $1-$3 per square foot, but only if you also handle disposal and leave a clean, undisturbed subgrade. Broken-up asphalt is accepted at most recycling yards for a tipping fee.
