What actually drives paver patio cost

Paver type sets the floor

Standard concrete pavers run $3-$6 per square foot in materials. Premium tumbled and large-format concrete is $6-$10, clay brick $7-$12, porcelain $10-$18, and natural stone $12-$30 depending on species and thickness.

Because materials are 40-50% of an installed paver job, the material choice moves the total far more than it does on an asphalt job. Switching from natural stone to a tumbled concrete lookalike can cut 30% from a patio budget.

Cuts cost more than area

A saw operator cutting a curved border on a 300 sq ft patio can add a full day of labour. Herringbone at 45 degrees produces two cuts on every perimeter unit; running bond parallel to the edges produces one cut on alternating units.

Circles, radius steps and inlaid banding are the most expensive square feet on any hardscape job. They are worth buying deliberately, not by accident through a sketch that ignored the paver module.

• A single pattern across the field is cheaper than a field-plus-inlay

Site access and excavation

A back garden reachable only through a 36-inch gate means every ton of base and every pallet of pavers moves by wheelbarrow. That can add $3-$6 per square foot against a site a skid-steer can drive into.

Excavation depth follows the soil. A clay site under a driveway spec may need 12 inches of base against 4 for a sandy patio — three times the aggregate tonnage and three times the disposal volume of spoil.

Regional labour

Hardscape labour rates vary by roughly 50% across the US, and paver installation is more labour-intensive than paving, so the regional spread is wider than for asphalt. Northeast and West Coast metros sit highest; the South and lower Midwest sit lowest.
