Why you buy more marble than you use
Slabs come in fixed sizes — commonly 110-120 inches by 63-70 inches, about 50-58 square feet. Your layout has to be nested inside those rectangles, and every sink cutout, seam allowance and edge build-up removes usable area.
A typical kitchen yields about 75% of the slab. Book-matched marble, where the veining must run continuously across pieces, can drop to 60% because the fabricator is constrained on where each piece can come from.
Marble is softer than it looks
Marble is calcium carbonate — it etches on contact with lemon juice, vinegar and wine, and it scratches more easily than granite or quartzite. Honed finishes hide etching better than polished ones.
Seal it on installation and re-seal annually in kitchens. Sealing slows staining; nothing prevents etching, which is a chemical reaction with the stone itself rather than a surface stain.
