What stone fill is
Fill stone is whatever cheap, angular, well-graded rock the quarry sells for bulk void filling — usually crusher run, #3 rock, or recycled crushed concrete. It is bought on price per ton and placed to volume, not to a finish spec.
At 110 lb per cubic foot, one cubic yard weighs about 1.49 US tons, and one ton spread 2" deep covers roughly 109 square feet.
How to install it
Fill in lifts and compact each one. A 3 foot deep hole filled in one pour will settle for years; the same hole filled in six 6 inch compacted lifts is done settling the day you finish.
The mistake that costs the most
Measuring only the deepest point. Voids are bowl-shaped, so the average depth is typically half to two-thirds of the maximum. Overestimating here is the most common cause of a leftover pile nobody wants.
The math behind the calculator
Square feet × (depth in inches ÷ 12) = cubic feet. Cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Cubic feet × 110 ÷ 2,000 = US tons. The waste allowance is applied to the volume before the weight conversion, which is how suppliers quote it.
