Measuring an irregular area
Split the shape into rectangles, triangles and circle segments, calculate each and add them together. A rectangle is length × width, a triangle is base × height ÷ 2, a circle is π × radius².
For curved beds, walk the perimeter with a hose or rope first, then measure the widest and narrowest points of each section and average them. That approach lands within a few percent of a survey.
Turning area into material
Flagstone and wall stone are sold by the pallet or ton with a published coverage figure — usually 100-140 sq ft per ton for 1-1.5 inch flagstone. Bulk aggregate has no fixed coverage; it depends entirely on depth.
Always order to the waste-inclusive number. Cutting flagstone generates 10-15% waste on patterned layouts, and pallets never arrive with the exact size mix you planned around.
