How UK stone walls are priced
British wallers quote per square metre of wall face — length times height — not by volume or by the tonne. A 10 m long, 1.2 m high wall is 12 m² of face regardless of how thick it is built, though thickness drives how much stone you buy.
In 2026 a traditional dry stone wall runs roughly £205-£355 per m² all-in, mortared natural stone £200-£350, and reconstituted stone £130-£220. Labour is usually 60-70% of the total: hand-fitting stone is slow, skilled work.
Dry stone versus mortared
Dry stone walling uses no mortar. Every stone is placed so its weight locks the wall together, with through-stones every metre and a batter of about 1:6 so the wall tapers inward. Done properly it lasts a century and drains freely, which is why it suits field boundaries and exposed sites.
Mortared walls go up faster and can be thinner, but they trap water. In frost-prone areas, that is what cracks them. If the wall is retaining soil, mortared construction needs weep holes and a drainage layer behind it.
What a quote should include
Ask for the foundation, the stone supply and delivery, coping, and site clearance to be itemised. A 150 mm concrete strip footing adds about £45-£85 per linear metre; coping — flat slabs or the traditional cock-and-hen upright course — adds £35-£70 per metre.
Stone delivery is a real cost in the UK: a 20-tonne artic load is far cheaper per tonne than a grab lorry, but many gardens can only take the smaller vehicle. Confirm access before agreeing a price.
